Pretrial Forensic Tracking Program

The pretrial forensic tracking unit focuses on adult defendants charged with crimes and who have persistent and severe mental health and co-occurring substance abuse disorders that require treatment before a court trial can take place. Case managers provide service at various points of contact including the courts, Criminal Justice Detention Facility (CJF) and state mental health institutes.

The forensic tracking unit:
  • Identifies defendants court ordered for competency evaluations, treatment to competency, or NGI (Not Guilty by reason of mental disease or defect) evaluations that may be eligible for release
  • Assesses social, clinical, and criminal history to evaluate public safety risks and determine client needs
  • Develops release plans notifying the courts of the client's status, providing recommendations for conditions of release, and proposing linkages to essential services provided by community-based organizations
  • Coordinates and collaborates with criminal justice personnel in order to facilitate a person's release from custody
  • Promotes the timely transfers of defendants court ordered to treatment between the jail and the state institutes providing treatment
  • Continues case management services until the person is found competent or NGI, released from custody, or discharged from the program
  • Provides services directly at the state institutes, county jail, and program offices
